American History

Lindy Hop, named after Charles Lindberg's hop over the Atlantic, is an important part of American History. It is danced to jazz music - an art created in the United States. It influenced and was influenced by Prohibition, the Great Depression, World War II, Jim Crow and race relations. The Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, New York (where Lindy Hop was predominantly danced) was an integrated ballroom before integration was accepted. The people who danced there largely didn't care what color you were, as long as you knew how to move with the music. In our class, your students will not only learn the specific historical significance of this dance, but they will also be learning a uniquely American art form.

Great Exercise

There is no question that dancing is a physically demanding art form. Our classes are active and fun, combining hand-eye coordination and overall body coordination with rhythm and timing of music. This would be an excellent class to fulfill a physical education requirement. We can submit a detailed list of the accomplishments the students made in class, keep track of their attendance, and assign them a grade at the end of the term.

Meet People

Lindy Hop is a very social dance that attracts a wide variety of people. We rotate partners in class and encourage them to make friends within the dance community. In addition, the students learn the etiquette of the dance floor.

International Community

In this day and age, Lindy Hop isn't only danced in almost every major city in the United States, but is very popular across the globe, including Canada, Sweden, France, Korea, England, Australia and many others. Many dancers travel to different areas to learn new moves, to broaden their dance vocabulary and meet other people with a similar passion. Learning Lindy Hop will connect your student to a greater international community of dancers, thereby giving them connections to different countries and cultures.
